about the artist
thank you for visiting, I'm Chris ball, the multi award-winning artist behind AnimalArtworkStudio.
I've been drawing for what seems like forever, picking up a pencil as a kid and some formal qualifications along the way including a BA(hons) in illustration. More recently I've been teaching myself the mystical art of Scratchboard - it's a tricky but awesome media to work in and makes for some really effective results. I'm currently a member of the international society of scratchboard artists.
the studio is situated on the edge of cannock chase AONB and Being a keen cyclist and general outdoorsy type, I am fascinated by the beauty of the natural world. wildlife in particular is the main focus of my work and I am a proud member of the Association of Animal Artists who do valuable work raising awareness and funds for various appropriate charities.
for me, A recognisable likeness of the subject i'm drawing is important, essential when commissioned with a portrait of a beloved pet, but i'm not striving for photorealism.
my work is mainly monochromatic, i like strong contrast - deep shadows and bright highlights - exploring how light can impact a piece. scratchboard and graphite are perfect for this and these are the mediums i work in.
